Abstract

There are opposing opinions on what value to use for allowable stress in driven steel piles. The key is that two types of stress must be considered: the structurally allowable stress, and the geotechnically allowable stress. Consequently, the structural engineer will always need input from the geotechnical engineer to determine the pile capacity. Three case histories illustrate the difference between the structural and geotechnical capacities of driven piles, and a relation for determining the geotechnically allowable stress is proposed.
