Abstract

This paper describes the physical and mechanical properties of the Ariake clay in Saga Plain and the effect of salt content on both these properties. The natural water content of the clay is considerably higher than the liquid limit; the sensitivity ratio is so high that it is comparable with the quick clay of northern Europe. Good correlations exist between the salt content and the plasticity index, remoulded strength and sensitivity ratio.
