Abstract

Geotechnical characterization and 3D modelling of the biologically cemented Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit - a case study

Highlights

  • # 12(,3, Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and in planning and control of production rates

  • %54*-672)74+67(-2.6" During the commissioning phase it was found that mining production was being hampered by biologically cemented/indurated layers encountered within the sands

  • It appears that the bacteria produce an extracellular polysaccharide, which form a gelling biofilm to trap nutrients

Introduction

# 12(,3, Biological cementation of the Mandena heavy mineral sand deposit in Madagascar was causing difficulty in dredge mining and in planning and control of production rates. Phase 1 focused on high-density geotechnical rotary core drilling, logging, sampling, and standard penetration testing (SPT) as well as piezocone with pore pressure measurement (CPTu) testing within a limited area.
