Abstract

Modern developments in “Complex System Science” and its geoscience equivalent “Earth System Science” require a certain skill set from the academic graduate in order for one to be fully applicable to the modern professional environment, be it academia or industry. It seems that academic curricula are not fully adapted yet to this shift and as a result graduates lack the appropriate skill set. Main reason for the discord is a time lag between frontline research and mainstream education. In order to establish harmony between the two arenas, geoscience curricula should be brought up-to-date with the professional requirements for academia, government and industry. To achieve this one need establish an international professional geoscience body, which would define and monitor required and taught skill sets on a regular basis by means of conferences.
