CannellMARY CANNEL, born in Liverpool, U.K., confesses to having had the temerity to write the biography of George Green, although she is neither a mathematician nor a physicist. She graduated from Liverpool University in French and History, and for some years taught students in schools and colleges in England and abroad, before embarking on the training of teachers. She retired as Principal of the College of Education in Nottingham, where she became interested in the life of the town's long neglected genius. She published her biography of Green in 1993, the year of the bicentenary celebrations of his birth. She is the Secretary of the George Green Memorial Fund, based in the Physics Department of Nottingham University. The Fund instigated the restoration of Green's Mill in Nottingham and the dedication of a plaque in his honour in Westminster Abbey in London.
