Abstract

This project involves the development of a mesoscale river habitat map of the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area (BISO) using GPS-based video mapping and image georeferencing techniques. The main section of the Big South Fork of the Cumberland River, and selected major tributaries (Clear Fork, New River, White Oak Creek, and North White Oak Creek) have been floated and mapped with GPS-based georeferenced video. Water depth is georeferenced and recorded using a custom shallow water sonar unit with operating range of 0.15—9 m (0.50—30 ft) . Physical bedforms are interpreted from the video footage in the lab and all habitat data is compiled in a georeferenced ArcGIS attribute table that can be queried for location of species specific habitat location. Habitat suitability for aquatic biodiversity is evaluated according to the EPA Rapid Bioassessment Protocol (RBP) .
