Abstract
The recording of earthquakes in the United States will take on a new dimension over the next decade with the announced development of a National Seismic Network by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). While a new National Seismic Network will significantly improve the U.S. ability to monitor earthquakes at the national and global scale, its capabilities will complement and enhance, rather than replace, most existing networks for detailed monitoring of regional and local seismicity.As described by USGS in a report released in June 1987, the National Seismic Network will be aimed primarily at providing uniform coverage of felt earthquakes in the United States and significant events worldwide. The network will allow the National Earthquake Information Service (NEIS) to improve significantly its ability to provide immediate and accurate locations of earthquakes for emergency response and public information. Installation of the network will start in 1988 in the eastern half of the country, with support from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
