Abstract

Under the exchange program of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, I had the privilege of making a one‐month visit to Hungary in August and September 1973. Under terms of the exchange agreement the U.S. Academy provided transportation to Hungary, and the Hungarian Academy provided subsistence and travel expenses within Hungary. In visits to Hungarian research institutes I learned about the geophysical research completed in the last few years and about studies then in progress. I discussed research problems and exchanged ideas with many Hungarian scientists (some of them old friends and colleagues) and became acquainted with their laboratories, instrumentation, and workshops.
