Abstract

In the measurement of absolute or relative cross sections of nuclear reactions in the region of extremely large backward angles using annular detectors geometrical particle beam characteristics may cause remarkable systematic errors. Their dependences on beam profile, emittance, detector geometry, and analytical behavior of the angular distributions are investigated. A simple beam focussing technique is discussed which (beside other appreciable experimental advantages) is capable of reducing those errors considerably.
