Abstract

Face gears, which are currently only in limited use, can be used in place of bevel or hypoid gears. Recently, a new application of face gears has been proposed for helicopter transmissions and this has led to revived interest. However the method for geometrical design of face gears is still not clarified. Especially, it is not clear how the inner and outer diameters of the ring gear are defined. In this paper, we describe a design method which recognizes the singularity of engagement. Specifically, the unique two lines on which the specific sliding becomes infinite were taken up as an index of design.
