Abstract
The typical approach of process planning is to consider the removal volume as a collection of machining features and to carry out the planning on a feature basis. The objective of this paper is to characterize the machined shape, reflecting characteristics of the machining process such as the cutting edge and the machine tool motion, for linking between the machining features and machining operation. We propose a model of the machining process based on the form-shaping function proposed by Reshetov and Portman and identify the characteristic parameters of the machining process. We can also classify the characteristics of the machined surface from the viewpoint of the removal volume, the machined surface and the contacting shape between the required surface and the cutting edge during a cutting motion.
