Abstract

The geometrical characteristics of icosahedral and cubo-octahedral clusters are studied. The various shells around the central atom that form the cluster, the number of atoms forming each shell, the number of nearest neighbors to each atom, the various surface sites and the total number of bonds are analyzed. General expressions for the total number of atoms, the total number of surface atoms and their distribution and the total number of bonds are given. Some considerations on the cluster shape stability are also discussed.
