Abstract

Abstract I was a post-doc in Roger Penrose’s group in Oxford in tlie mid-seventies and I learned a great deal during those two years with Roger; indeed, more than in any comparable period in my subsequent academic career. This, of course, included much technical material in general relativity and geometry. However, I learned something even more valuable, something intangible and deeper, just watching Roger select scientific problems and arrive at solutions with his unique geometric insights, almost effortlessly, with a touch of magic. Since then, his way of approaching science has continued to have a deep influence on all my work. It is therefore an honour and a pleasure for me to contribute to this volume.
