Abstract

Road crashes are mainly caused by three factors which are humans, roads, and vehicles. Geometric design plays a significant role in every road and it is influential in road alignment. Proper Geometric design will help in reducing road crashes. The reviews say that safety can be increased by increasing the lane width and shoulder width. Also, the crash rates are directly proportional to the curve sharpness. When the geometric design is performed manually, it is very cumbersome, time-consuming, and highly liable to costly errors. In this present study, OpenRoads software is employed for the geometric design of the Puthupally - Manarcad road stretch (about 3.5 km) in the Kottayam district. Project Stretch connects SH-9 at Puthupally and NH- 183 at Manarcad. The design method includes Terrain modeling, Horizontal alignment, Vertical Alignment, Corridor and Template Creation, Superelevation, and Plan and profiles production.
