Abstract

The establishment of the new magnetic observatory at Charters Towers is described. Hourly values of the magnetic elements are analysed from two data sets (1984–1985 and 1986–1987) to provide solar diurnal variations during different months. These are compared with other stations in Australia and Papua New Guinea to study the behaviour of the focus of the Sq current systems. The unar geomagnetic variations are consistent with other Australian stations. An oceanic lunar tide is detected in the vertical element Z.
