Abstract

Investigation of the organic matter in oil shales from The Narrows Graben, Queensland and other Australian Tertiary oil shales has shown that most of the organic matter is derived from planktonic algae including Pediastrum. These oil shales are termed lamosites. The presence of Pediastrum in Australian lamosites indicates that these oil shales were deposited in fresh to brackish lacustrine waters which were probably shallow and possibly adjacent to the sea. Occurrence of Pediastrum in lamosites from Yugoslavia, Thailand, China and the US indicates that Pediastrum was probably of widespread occurrence during the Tertiary and may be an important constituent of many other lamosites of Tertiary Age. 16 references, 6 figures, 1 table.
