Abstract

Abstract The autochthonous formations of the Argentera massif form the base of the Col de Tende unit in Cuneo province, Italy. The Cretaceous beds of the unit are well developed to the northwest, but are absent to the southeast as a result of pre-Lutetian erosion. Toward the northwest the Col de Tende unit becomes more plastic and underlies overthrust units. Some of the latter show facies of Triora-type units, while others exhibit a facies hitherto unknown among the Subbrianconnais units. The contact with the Triassic of the Monte Vecchio unit is marked by a crush zone in beds exhibiting facies of the basal complex of the Helminthoid Flysch nappe.
