Abstract

A 250 km long deep seismic section—the first of its kind in West Germany's DEKORP Project—is interpreted in terms of late Variscan collisional tectonics. The structural model used is based on the intracontinental thrust tectonics concept of modern collision orogens. The crustal profile across the Saxothuringian Zone seems to indicate north-facing ramps, antiformal stacks and culminations within the crystalline basement of the internal Mid European Variscides that have been only partially overprinted by Permo-Mesozoic crustal stretching.
