Abstract

Geo-formational analyses have not yet become widely used in developing the stratigraphy of the Early Precambrian. The paper looks at the advantages of geo-formational partition over the traditional stratigraphic dismemberment approach to the study of Early Precambrian. Using the Ukrainian Shield as an example, the paper demonstrates the geo-formational similarities of the samebtype metamorphic complexes and their differences. The results indicate that metamorphic formations are currently the only method of visual comparison and correlation of Early Precambrian stratigraphic complexes, series and stratum. Neither traditional approaches to naming local stratigraphic partitions, nor the geo-chronological studies can provide such results.
