Abstract
In January and February 1976, eight- to ten-day geology-prospecting courses were held in the Arctic Communities of Pond Inlet, Igloolik, and Frobisher Bay. As most of the Inuit students are not experienced with English, interpreters were required. The instructor translating from geologese into English and the interpreter from English to Inuktituk. Concepts also had to be translated, frequently by the use of analogy. This required considerable imagination on the part of instructor and/or translator. Notes on claim staking and rock and mineral identification printed in syllables, rock and mineral samples, maps, photographs and movies all proved useful teaching aids.
