Abstract

Summary In the Romanian territory of the Moesian Platform there are all geological conditions for oil and gas generation, migration and accumulation. In the reservoir rocks of the Moesian Platform have been discovered more than 145 oil and gas fields. They have a very different distribution both in the depth and the stratigraphic interval and in the area extending of this basin. All these fields are located in the northern part of the basin. The petroleum is reservoired in older rocks only in the west (Devonian, Triassic and Middle Jurassic rocks) and eastward the age of reservoirs gradually diminishes until to Pontian reservoir rocks. Analysis of the geological, geophysical and petroleum data suggests that this basin contains at least three effective petroleum systems: two of them are thermogenic systems and one is biogenic system. The two thermogenic petroleum systems are represented by (1) the Paleozoic system and (2) the Mesozoic system and biogenic system is of Neogene age.
