Abstract

The main goal of this study is to use geophysics to characterize the geological setting of the Barzaman Formation, in the vicinity of Al Ain International Airport, northwest of Al Ain City, United Arab Emirates (UAE). To achieve this objective, Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) surveys were acquired, rock samples were collected, and plug samples were prepared for porosity and permeability measurements for the different layers. In addition, thin sections for the different rock types, representing the different layers, were prepared. The results show agreement between the properties of the outcrop layers and their measured electrical resistivity values, obtained from the VES and ERT profiles. There is also good correlation between field measured formation thickness and geophysical layer thickness estimates. The petrophysical properties of the layers interpreted from the geophysical surveys also match those expected from the petrographic analyses.
