Abstract

Introduction Three years ago I visited a number of overseas geological surveys in order to study their methods of geological map production. It was originally suggested that a draftsman from the Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) should visit the United States Geological Survey (USGS) after two of our geologists had studied their methods of editing and publication, and had been impressed by the efficiency with which multicolour maps and black and white text figures were produced. It was recognised that other geological surveys were also potential sources of information, and Canada, Britain, Germany, and Italy were added to my itinerary.
