Abstract

The results of geophysical investigations, undertaken by the Institute of Oceanology in conjunction with the Azerbaydzhan Division of the All-Union Scientific-Research Institute of Geophysics in 1974 in the Middle Caspian region, are interpreted from petroleum-geological aspects. The presence of a rise in the basement surface structure has been established northeast of the assumed Central Caspian arch, and an increase in the thickness of the Jurassic and Lower Cretaceous complexes of deposits toward the Dagestan coast has also been determined. On the basis of these data, we have considered the Mesozoic geological history of the Middle Caspian region and have proposed the formation, during this stage, of a large basin, termed the Pridagestan (Near-Dagestan). At the end of Mesozoic time and during the Cenozoic Era, the Pridagestan basin was a vast focus for the generation of oil and gas. The eastern portion of the sea of the Middle Caspain region and the maritime anticlinal zone of Dagestan are regarded as probable regions of petroleum accumulation.
