The general geographic relations are shown in figure 1. The rocks are limestones, shales, conglomerates, quartzites and flagstones, ranging from Middle Cambrian to Middle Devonian in age. The harder members give rise to high rough ridges, of which the most prominent are Skunnemunk, Bearfort, Bellvale, Green Pond, Copperas, Kanouse and Bowling Green mountains. Greenwood lake lies in one of the principal valleys.The rocks are comprised in about nine formations, of which the distribution and structural relations are shown in plate 17. The uppermost member is a coarse conglomerate which constitutes the higher portions of. Skunnemunk and Bell vale mountains in New York and of Bearfort mountain in New Jersey.
