Abstract

An enhanced simulation tool was developed that can be used by CO2 sequestration stakeholders in their decision-making process to increase their confidence in investing the geological CO2 storage capacity. The analytical simulation tool provides a science based estimate of storage capacity by applying novel analytical models for both closed- and open boundary aquifers and analyzes the possibility of enhancing storage efficiency by integrating brine management (brine-extraction technology). The EASiTool is capable of estimating injectivity in individual wells and at the reservoir scale for both open- and closed boundary reservoirs. Active pressure management technologies using brine-extraction wells to remove some of the brine and relieve pressure build-up was integrated into the analytical models, both to enhance storage capacity and control pressure build-up. The EASiTool can be used to provide reservoir-scale storage-capacity estimates.
