Abstract

This paper extends current debates concerning the integration of the English space economy during industrialisation. In so doing, it introduces the study of the archival records of British banking to reconstructing the historical geography of English capitalism. A review and critique of theoretical problems provides a context for analysis of the circulation of finance capital in the industrial revolution. The geography of finance capital and commercial intelligence is explored through reconstructing the correspondence systems in English banking circa 1780–1840. A discussion of regional crises and the political economy of transformation in the banking sector in the early nineteenth century connects these themes to broader debates on the construction of a historico-geographical materialism.
