Abstract

The geographical distribution and variation of Argynnis callippe in California and adjacent regions is described with a genetic viewpoint by which it is assumed that populations are different because they have different genes or different frequencies of genes. Maps are given which show that only two of six distinctive characters are always completely correlated, the distribution of the others bearing no definite relation to the others. Additional data are given to support the conclusion reached in a former paper that most characters distinguishing geographic races are adaptive in character, but that this adaptiveness is generally of a concealed nature.
