Abstract

To accommodate a need shared by many of our readers, the editors of THE PROFESSIONAL GEOGRAPHER encourage the submission of manuscripts offering imaginative new approaches to teaching. An example is the following article, which describes a conceptually oriented introductory geography course desgined around the generation of a hypothetical world. In this course, students map patterns of the biophysical environment at a global scale and aspects of the social organization of space at a regional scale. Also discussed in the article are the conceptual bases of the course and students' understanding of the role of such concepts as determinism, time, and scale.
