Abstract

As of 31 March 2020, Pakistan has gone about to enact the Geographical Indications (Registration and Protection) Act, 2020 (GIRPA’20) pursuant to its treaty obligations under Article 22 of TRIPS Agreement. This treatise provides an overview of GIRPA’20. The national economy of Pakistan will greatly benefit from GIRPA’20. Now that GIRPA’20 have been enacted it is recommended that Pakistan should also join the Lisbon Agreement for Protection of Appellation of Origins (1958). This agreement established an international system of registration and protection of appellations of origin. It adopted the French definition of appellation of origin by restricting the protected indications to cases in which the quality and characteristics of a product are 'due exclusively or essentially to the geographical environment, including natural and human factors'.
