e13066Background: Studies have shown that an increasingly greater proportion of renal malignancy cases are now being treated by partial nephrectomy (PN) rather than radical nephrectomy (RN). This study observed the adoption rate of PN over RN in different health service areas (HSAs) for the treatment of malignant neoplasm of the kidney, over the past 31 years in New York State (NYS). Methods: The study was a retrospective cohort study of 50,953 cases between 1982-2012, from the Statewide Planning And Research Cooperative System database. Patient records matching the diagnosis of malignant renal neoplasm (ICD9:18.90) were extracted and separated by surgical procedure, RN (ICD9 55.5, N = 39,318) and PN (ICD9 55.4, N = 11,365). The records were organized based on the facility zip code and grouped into 8 individual HSAs.
