Abstract

Geographic images stored as digital image files within an image processing and display system typically contain more information than merely the digital values that define the image. This “data about the data”, or metadata, can affect the efficiency of the system's analysis and display functions. This paper gives several examples from existing image processing systems of the type of information that is included as metadata, and how this information can be used to improve image processing or display functions.
