Abstract

Summary The goal of this research project was to show, how geographical information technology can be used in radiovisibility modelling and radio communication system design. The reason for this job was the request from communication department of Lithuanian energy system for modern communication systems design technologies. Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology was chosen as basic modelling tool. The point was, GIS very well deals with spatial data, which are the basis for this kind of modelling. Usage of GIS technology in Lithuania started 5 years ago and there are already spatial data, which can be successfully used for analytical purposes. The project goes though many steps of radio communication system design. Starting from choosing the best position for radio antenna, it ends with detailed report about visibility zones, created using different surfaces. Software of Environment System Research Institute (ESRI) Arc/Info, ArcView was used in the project.
