Abstract

During the Southern Song dynasty, Wuxing was part of the capital district due to its proximity to Lin’an, the imperial capital of the time. Mountains to the south of Wuxing and the nearby Taihu Lake played their part in the development of the art of garden design which is studied in this paper. Cross-analysis and deduction are used in order to define both the geographical features of the region and their importance for the art of garden design, to describe the geographical distribution of private gardens and to study the history of transformation of the ”Southern Garden”.
