Abstract
The International Association for Physical Sciences (IAPSO), Commission on Mean Sea Level and Tides, Geodetic Committee, has completed a report entitled “Geodetic Fixing of Tide Gauge Bench Marks”. The report is the result of a three‐day workshop held at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), Mass., in November 1988, cosponsored by WHOI, IAPSO, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).Geodetisists actively engaged in the application of advanced geodetic technologies, including Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), the Global Positioning System (GPS), Satellite Altimetry, and Gravimetry, to the study of change in sea level were asked to: Identify the oceanographic and geophysical requirements for fixing Tide Gauge Bench Marks (TGBMs) in an absolute terrestrial coordinate system. Evaluate the technology available for fixing TGBMs. Make recommendations of a strategy for coordinated global fixing of TGBMs and for making the results centrally available.
