Abstract

In presenting this paper before the American Geophysical Union, the writer feels that he should inform the members that it will not be a technical discussion of geodetic problems, but rather a general description of the geodetic and mapping operations that are being carried out, under his direction, along the boundaries between the Republic of Guatemala and the two adjoining Republics of Honduras and El Salvador. The writer believes that the geodetic part of this work should be of special interest to the Union. The seven countries properly considered in the Central American Zone (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, and British Honduras) have thus far made very little progress in detailed mapping or in accurate geodetic surveys. The geodetic work now in progress is not a local affair of a single government but is international in character, and the engineers of the three Republics concerned are taking considerable interest in its progress.
