Abstract

In the present study, the geochemical data were used to investigate the provenance, weathering history, and paleoenvironmental studies of the Shurijeh Shales, Kopet-Dagh Basin. The X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence spectrometry techniques are used for geochemical analyses. The provenance discrimination equations and plots of the Shurijeh Shales in the provenance discrimination diagrams indicate that the nature of the source rocks probably was acidic (granitic). With attention to the chemical index of alteration, plagioclase index of alteration, and chemical index of weathering values which range from 76.26 to 95.48 %, it can be contended that the litho-components of the studied shales were subjected to intense chemical weathering. The low values of Ni/Co and Cu/Zn ratios and investigation of P2O5, V, and Al2O3 values of Shurijeh Shales suggest that the deposition of these shales is performed under oxic shallow marine to fluvial environments.
