Abstract

Abstract Geochemical studies indicate that the Early Proterozoic leptite formation of metavolcanics is comagmatic with the primorogenic I-type granites. Both rock units show an evolution consistent with the one predicted by increased maturity of a continental arc. The serorogenic S-type granites and the postorogenic I-type granites (Dala type) form minor intrusions. The main episode of plutonic activity is terminated by the postorogenic S-type granites of the Småland-Värmland belt. The geology of central and south-eastern Sweden is seen as two major granitoid belts trending N-S, with I-type (primorogenic) granites to the east and S-type (Småland-Värmland) granites to the west, resembling the geology of modern continental arcs, e.g. the western Americas.
