Abstract

ABSTRACT The geochemical composition of nine (9) crude oil samples from the Upper Devonian Birdbear Formation of southeastern Saskatchewan was determined using GC and GC-MS techniques. The Birdbear-reservoired oils, formerly included within oil Family D of Osadetz et al. (1992) together with oils from the Middle Devonian Winnipegosis pinnacle reefs, can be resolved from a set of twenty one (21) Winnipegosis-reservoired oils on the basis of a range of geochemical parameters. A detailed geochemical oil-oil correlation reveals that these stratigraphically separated groups have variable gasoline range characteristics, especially different Paraffin Indices and distribution of C7 alkanes (Mango parameters), as well as different C13-C30 normal alkane profiles, Pr/Ph, Pr/nC17 and Ph/nC18 ratios. The distribution of terpane biomarkers is similar in both groups, although Winnipegosis samples have more pronounced C34 hopane prominence and Ts/Tm ratios often greater than 1.0. In contrast, sterane biomarker signatures are quite different with a high concentration of diasteranes and prominent C21 regular steranes in the Birdbear oil samples, and a different relative abundance of C27:C28:C29 regular steranes. Such compositional differences are often genetic in nature, suggesting a different source rock for oils found in Birdbear Formation and a separate petroleum system operating in the Saskatchewan Group across Canadian Williston Basin. However, as the geochemical composition of Birdbear-reservoired oils is quite unique, it is also possible that it may have resulted from mixing of Winnipegosis-like oils with hydrocarbons from other sources during a cross-stratal secondary oil migration, demonstrating multiple source character of these oils. RESUME La composition geochimique de neuf (9) echantillons de petrole brut provenant de la Formation de Birdbear du Devonien superieur du sud-est de la Saskatchewan a ete determinee en utilisant les techniques de CG et CG-SM. Les petroles trouves dans les reservoirs du Birdbear, auparavant inclus dans les petroles de la famille D de Osadetz et al. (1992), de meme que les petroles des recifs a pinacle du Winnipegosis du Devonien moyen, peuvent etre decomposee en un jeu de vingt et un (21) petroles en reservoir dans le Winnipegosis sur la base d'une gamme de parametres geochimiques. Une correlation geochimique petrole-petrole de detail revele que ces groupes de stratigraphie separees ont des caracteristiques variables de la gamme de l'essence, particulierement des differences dans les indices de la paraffine, la distribution des alcanes C7 (parametres Mango) des difference de profils d'alcane normal C13-C30, et de rapports Pr/Ph, Pr/nC17 et Ph/nC18. La distribution des biomarqueurs de terpane est similaire dans les deux groupes, meme si les echantillons du Winnipegosis ont une proeminence en hopane C34 plus prononce et des rapports Ts/Tm souvent plus grand que 1,0. En contraste, les signatures de biomarqueurs de sterane sont tres differentes, montrant une haute concentration de diasteranes et de proeminents steranes reguliers C21 dans les echantillons de petrole de Birdbear, et une abondance relative differente de sterame regulier C27:C28:C29. De telles differences de composition sont souvent de nature genetique, suggerant une roche source differente pour les petroles trouves dans la Formation de Birdbear et un systeme de petrole different operant dans le Groupe de Saskatchewan a travers le bassin de Williston canadien. Toutefois, etant donne que la composition geochimique des petroles en reservoir dans le Birdbear est tres unique, il est aussi possible qu'elle ait pu resulter du melange de petrole semblable de type Winnepegosis et d'hydrocarbures provenant d'autres sources durant la migration secondaire inter-strate, demontrant ainsi la caracteristique de sources multiples pour ces petroles.
