Abstract

In the Upper Carboniferous and the Permian volcanic rocks are more abundant than one expects from surface outcrops in Central Europe. About 500 chemical analyses always show similar compositions over the whole region. The chemical composition of this calc-alkaline rock suite covers the range from basalts to rhyolites—including andesites and dacites. This composition can easily be compared with that of the rocks in the young andesite regions (island arcs, South America, Turkey). The concentrations of the stable trace elements (average from 45 andesites) are close to the known data from young andesites too. Applying Ringwood's model one may conclude that the permocarbonian volcanic rocks have assimilated crustal material too. Arguments for plate-tectonics during the Carboniferous and the Permian in Europe have been published by several authors in the last years. The application of these geochemical investigations is proving this assumption.
