Abstract
Dealt with in this paper are some geochemical characteristics of porphyry copper mineralization, especially those observed in intrusive bodies, wall rocks, alteration zones, ores and pyrites. Ore bearing bodies have been correlated with barren ones from such aspects as major and trace elements, copper contents of biotite and pyrite, and distribution pattern of copper. In the mineralized rocks, trace elements show apparent zoning surrounding ore bodies; major and trace elements seem to show some regularities with respect to their variations in the process of alteration, and as a result each alteration zone displays its own peculiar element association. Trace elements in ores can provide information on the genetic types of ore deposits, thus of great help in distinguishing ore types, while those in pyrites may be indicative of the main mineralizing stage, providing clues for distinguishing ore-bearing from barren rocks, and of the extent of denudation of ore bodies.
