Abstract

This chapter updates current knowledge on the origin of volatile elements (H, C, N, noble gases) present in the atmosphere and the oceans. The review focuses on recent advances on cosmochemical sources of volatile elements including meteorites and comets, on planet formation models related to delivery of those volatile elements to Earth, and on early evolution of the atmosphere. The major share of terrestrial volatiles originated from two cosmochemical sources, one within the internal zone, and the other located radially away. The contribution of protosolar gas from the nebula was negligible but comets supplied volatile elements to the atmosphere in limited proportions.
