Abstract

An experiment to determine the value of the geocentric gravitational constant (GM) from the analysis of Doppler-and-range data received during the near-earth phase of the trajectory of an interplanetary spacecraft has been conducted. The results of analysis of data for GM values (km 3 s −2) from Mariners 9 and 10 are: • Mariner 9 398,600.7 ± 0.2 • Mariner 10 398,600.6 ± 0.2 These values are consistent with a value of the speed of light of 299,792.5 km s −1. The currently adopted value for the speed of light implies a systematic reduction of the GM values above by 0.17 km 3 s −2.
