Abstract

This paper documents the present status of meadows and pastures in Schleswig-Holstein. By comparing historical and present-day vegetation maps, floristic change within the vegetation types during the last decades is illustrated. Caused by intensified agricultural use, development shows the following characteristics: 1. On peat soils, the formerly extensively used meadows of Calthion-stands have been converted into intensive pastures of the Lolio-Potentillion type. The remaining wet meadows are mostly grazed or lie fallow. 2. On mineral soils, a dramatic decline of poorly productive and wet pastures of Cynosurion and Arrhenatheretum elatioris is noted (...)
