Abstract
Despite some variations across approaches, the basic principle that underlies genre‐based language teaching is that awareness of the forms, purposes, and social contexts of texts will aid in writing development. This entry describes prominent approaches to genre‐based language teaching, including those associated with systemic functional linguistics, English for specific purposes, and rhetorical genre studies. Underlying theories, goals, and common pedagogical strategies within these approaches are described. The entry also reviews key research into and theoretical principles of genre‐based language teaching.
