Abstract

1992 marked the 500th anniversary of Columbus' arrival in the 'New World'. When the Spanish government announced its plan to hold large-scale commemorations to mark the occasion, it sparked a storm of controversy: Did 1492 mark the beginning of the encounter of two worlds — or the largest genocide in human history? This book provides an analysis of this multifaceted debate in Spain and Latin America. The issues discussed are now highly topical again: many of the questions raised then need to be answered more urgently today than ever before.
