Abstract

Human polyomavirus 1 (HPyV1) is ubiquitous in the human population. It typically causes subclinical infections although it can cause disease in immunosuppressed individuals. The virus is classified into 4 genotypes. The various genotypes of HPyV1 exhibit differences in the ability to propagate in human cells. Studies of viral replication have highlighted the importance of VP1 gene composition for the efficiency of HPyV1 propagation. Herewith we present, for the first time, the genotyping of 58 HPyV1 strains detected in the saliva of human subjects. Phylogenetic analysis of partial VP1 sequences showed that all strains belonged to the rare genotype II.
