Abstract
Genomics Recapitulates History in Europe
Highlights
Most of us know our families back a few generations but, beyond that, have little idea who our ancestors were or where they lived
Selected PLOS Biology research articles are accompanied by a synopsis written for a general audience to provide non-experts with insight into the significance of the published work
Regardless of physical proximity, recent relatedness is low between the Italian peninsula and the rest of the continent
Summary
Most of us know our families back a few generations but, beyond that, have little idea who our ancestors were or where they lived. In this issue of PLOS Biology, Peter Ralph and Graham Coop use genomic data to give us a closer look at the recent roots of modern Europeans. To get a sharper picture of the interplay between recent relatedness and geography in Europe, Ralph and Coop compared genomewide sequencing data from 2,257 people across the continent.
