Abstract

Bonobos ( Pan paniscus ) are well known for their sociosexual behaviors, the most common of which is genito–genital (GG) rubbing. GG rubbing occurs when two females embrace each other face to face and rub their genitalia together. Several hypotheses have been proposed attempting to explain this behavior, all of which are related to the formation of a more cooperative and less aggressive social world when compared with the closely related chimpanzee ( Pan troglodytes ).
