Abstract
Mali is endemic for schistosomiasis and many travelers have contracted this disease in Dogon country.1,2 Patients usually present with an acute disease called Katayama syndrome. Chronic forms are also noticed, and sometimes unusual localizations can occur. We report one case of an isolated genital schistosomiasis in a young traveler coming back from Dogon country. A 20‐year‐old man presented to our travel clinic in September 2003. He complained of headache, abdominal pain, and a rash on his lower limbs. He had been traveling in Mali and went swimming in a waterfall in Dogon country 4 weeks before. He reported a generalized pruritus just after bathing. He was traveling with five other people. All of them went swimming at the same place and presented the same symptoms. All biological tests were normal except for the blood count, which showed important eosinophilia (5,340 polynuclear eosinophil/μL). Although the serology was negative, acute schistosomiasis was considered and the patient received two courses of 40 mg/kg praziquantel.
